The 2016 Rural Retreat Farmers Market at the Depot committee has expanded the market season and changed the market’s hours of operation (1:30-5:30) to better accommodate our many dedicated farmers, bakers, artisans and our loyal customers. Additionally, this years committee is working on several special events throughout the season with additional details to follow.
This year the Market will begin with a special Plant Sale on Friday May 6th from 2-6pm. Any one with plants who would like to participate is encouraged to contact the market manager.
On June 8th, the market will kick off it’s regular season at 1:30pm with the new market hours and continue to operate every Wednesday afternoon rain or shine until October 5th.

Donnie Buck will have fresh farm eggs and whole chickens, Mike Cassel will have grass fed Angus beef, Alvin, Donna and Odell will have plenty of just picked vegetables. Don’t forget our wonderful bakers Ester, Louise, Mellissa and Sue will have a wide assortment of breads, cookies and baked goods to compliment your meal tonight.
Still not enough to entice you to the market? How about a Depot dog from Evelyn for lunch while you shop with our very own group of very talented artisans. You can find hand made wreaths by Leslie, soaps by Ruth and Maria and Kim’s one of a kind alpaca creations.
Additionally, the local Virginia Department of Health office will also be set up at the market will be giving Tdap vaccines today.
This week the members of the Wythe Bland Master Gardeners will be set up at the market to answer any questions you may have concerning your garden. Additionally, they will be making various teas from a variety of plants.
July is almost here and that means the Farmer’s Market at the Depot will once again be the place to be on Wednesday afternoons. This year all of your favorite vendors will be back as well as several new ones all selling fresh locally grown produce, wonderful baked goods or fine handcrafted items.
If your weekend plans involve eating make sure to stop by and pick up some fresh from the garden vegetables from Mr. Castle or the ARE camp. For those making your favorite blueberry pie recipe, stop by and say hello to Bill and Marcia from Henley Mountain Berry Farm or Yungho from Hope Blueberry Farm.
Evelyn will be serving her soon to be famous Depot Dogs for lunch and our good friends Donnie and Jack are bringing a couple of their old tractors down.
